British honours served Canada for many years. Then came a system of its own, which began in 1967 - the centennial year of Confederation - with the Order of Canada. Any citizen may put forward the name of someone worth recognising. In 1973, for instance, the jazz pianist Oscar Peterson was given the Order of Canada by the 20th Governor General, Roland Michener.
