John Buchan, the 1st Baron Tweedsmuir, was a well-liked Governor General of Canada from 1935 to 1940. Speaking to the Canadian Club of Halifax in 1937, he said that immigrant groups should keep their own individuality and each add something to the national character. In his view every group could learn from the others. People could hold on to their own loyalties and traditions and, at the same time, value the new shared tradition that grows when they join together. He was the fifteenth Governor General, and was once photographed wearing a Blood (Kainai First Nation) headdress.
