The Victoria Cross, written V.C., is the highest honour a Canadian can receive. It is given for the most conspicuous bravery in the face of the enemy. That can mean a daring or outstanding act of valour, an act of self-sacrifice, or extreme devotion to duty while facing enemy forces. It is rare. Counting from 1854, a total of 96 Canadians had been awarded the Victoria Cross as of 2012.

Alexander Roberts Dunn, born in the place we now call Toronto, was the first Canadian ever awarded the Victoria Cross. He held the rank of Lieutenant and rode with the British Army at Balaclava in 1854, during the Crimean War, where he joined the Charge of the Light Brigade. Able Seaman William Hall, whose parents had been American slaves, came from Horton, Nova Scotia. His part in the Siege of Lucknow, fought in the Indian Rebellion of 1857, made him the first black man to hold the V.C.

Ukraine was the birthplace of Corporal Filip Konowal. In 1917, at the Battle of Hill 70, he showed exceptional courage. Of all Canadian Corps members born outside the British Empire, he was the first to receive the V.C. Captain Billy Bishop, a flying ace from Owen Sound, Ontario, won his own V.C. while serving with the Royal Flying Corps in the First World War. The Royal Canadian Air Force later made him an honorary Air Marshal.

Captain Paul Triquet came from Cabano, Quebec. During the Second World War, in 1943, he led his men and a few tanks against Casa Berardi in Italy, and that action won him the V.C. He rose to Brigadier afterwards. Lieutenant Robert Hampton Gray was born in Trail, B.C., and flew as a navy pilot. In August 1945 he sank a Japanese warship with his bombs, and he died in the action, only days before the Second World War ended. No Canadian since has received the V.C.
