What can young people gain by joining the cadets?

Nobody in Canada is forced into the armed forces. Military service is not compulsory. Serving is a choice, and it is a noble way to contribute to the country as well as an excellent career. Part-time service is possible too, in the local naval reserve, the militia and the air reserves, where members pick up valuable experience, skills and contacts.

Defending the country is not only about the military. A citizen can serve in the Coast Guard. A citizen can also join emergency services close to home, such as a police force or a fire department.
