Nazism and Fascism had to be beaten, so the Allies struck at Nazi-occupied Europe. In 1943–44 Canadians helped set Italy free. Next came the huge landing in Normandy, in northern France, on 6 June 1944. That day is known as D-Day. Some 15,000 Canadian troops stormed Juno Beach and took it from the German Army. It counts as a great national achievement. Of every ten Allied soldiers who came ashore on D-Day, roughly one was Canadian.
The Canadian assault on Juno Beach was painted by Orville Fisher, and his picture is one of the best-known images of Canada at war. After Normandy, the Canadian Army liberated the Netherlands in 1944–45. Canadian forces helped force the German surrender of May 8, 1945. That surrender brought six years of war in Europe to an end.
