Which is the most populous Atlantic province?

Nova Scotia has more people than any other Atlantic province. It has long been called the gateway to Canada, because so many newcomers arrived through it. The Bay of Fundy, on its shores, has the highest tides on earth. Ships and the sea run through the province's identity: building ships, catching fish, moving cargo. Halifax, the capital, is the biggest port on Canada's east coast. Its water is deep and never freezes. That made it important for trade and for defence, and the largest naval base in Canada is there.

Nova Scotia has mined coal for a very long time, and forestry and farming have also supported it. More recently, companies have searched offshore for oil and gas. Culture is strong here too. Celtic and Gaelic traditions came with settlers and are still alive in music and celebration. The province holds more than 700 festivals every year. The best known is the military tattoo staged in Halifax, a spectacular show of marching and music.
