Why this is the answer
From the official Discover Canada study guide — 3.4.3 Expansion of the Dominion:
Canada began in 1867 with Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Manitoba and the Northwest Territories joined in 1870, British Columbia in 1871, and Prince Edward Island in 1873. The Arctic Islands were transferred to the N.W.T. in 1880. Yukon Territory came in 1898, then Alberta and Saskatchewan in 1905. Newfoundland and Labrador joined in 1949, and Nunavut was created in 1999. In the 1920s some people thought the British West Indies should join Canada. That never happened, but Canada and the Commonwealth Caribbean remain close.
