Besides the national anthem, Canada has a Royal Anthem. Its title is "God Save the King" — or "God Save the Queen" while a woman reigns. French speakers know it as "Dieu protege le Roi." Whenever Canadians want to show honour to the Sovereign, this anthem may be sung or played. That is why, at an event held in honour of royalty, you might hear O Canada and then the Royal Anthem too. The two anthems are separate pieces with separate purposes.
