3.1.5 Leaders and Defenders of New France

The English demanded Quebec in 1690, and Count Frontenac would not give it up. His answer became famous: "My only reply will be from the mouths of my cannons!" New France had another great hero in Pierre Le Moyne, Sieur d'Iberville. From the late 1600s into the early 1700s he beat the English again and again, as far north as James Bay and as far south as Nevis in the Caribbean. Sir Guy Carleton, also known as Lord Dorchester, later governed Quebec. He stood up for Canadien rights, threw back an American invasion of Quebec in 1775, and oversaw how Loyalists resettled in Nova Scotia and Quebec during 1782-83.
