The name Dominion of Canada was proposed in 1864 by Sir Leonard Tilley, an elected official from New Brunswick and one of the Fathers of Confederation. His idea came from the Bible, from Psalm 72, which speaks of "dominion from sea to sea and from the river to the ends of the earth." Behind the words lay a vision: one country across a whole continent, strong, united, wealthy and free. Canada's Constitution carried the title, official use lasted roughly a century, and it still belongs to the national heritage.
