Ottawa is the capital city of Canada. It stands on the Ottawa River. Queen Victoria picked it as the capital in 1857. In 2012 it was the fourth largest metropolitan area in the country. Around the city lies the National Capital Region, an area of 4,700 square kilometres. That region protects the historic buildings and the natural surroundings of the area. Ottawa's Rideau Canal was first built as a military waterway. Today visitors come to see it, and in winter people skate along it.
